Artificial intelligence has made an impact in all industry verticals that one can think of. It has brought about a significant change in the way people and businesses across the globe function. AI has made things extremely easy and convenient in day-to-day operations. Slowly but surely the use of AI in defense is increasing with each passing day. More countries around the world are embracing artificial intelligence in military operations to gain an edge over other rival countries.
The military strength of any country is a direct indicator of any country’s power. The most developed countries across the world like the USA, Russia, China, etc. invest heavily in military power. A major portion of this investment goes into the research, development, and use of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, blockchain technology, propulsion technology, and many others. The future of artificial intelligence in military combat is quite bright considering the large data volume it can handle and the quick decisions an AI-powered machine can take. India as a strong military power must concentrate on the potential of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence. The use of artificial intelligence in Indian army will make it an even more powerful force to tackle adversaries.
Artificial intelligence and its role in military combat
Artificial intelligence is a disruptive technology that involves the use of machines and gadgets that can imitate the cognitive and analytical powers of the human brain. This can solve a lot of challenges and problems, thus leading to superior decision-making. Artificial intelligence in Indian army is the future of military operations in combat zones.
At the start of 2019, General Bipin Rawat, the Indian Army Chief highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence in Indian army and why it needs to be adopted at the earliest. In February 2019, the defense military established a high-level defense AI council (DAIC) for the strategic implementation of AI in defense. The DAIC was entrusted the responsibility of providing valuable insights for the use of AI in defense. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) is working towards developing a wide range of intelligent systems for the Indian army by making use of disruptive technologies.
Here is how the use of artificial intelligence in Indian army can help strengthen its military operations.
1- Logistics and supply management
The make or break of any military operation by the Indian army is largely dependent on the efficiency of military logistics. Managing the complex logistics of the Indian army is not an easy task. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning with the existing logistical systems will help in managing things much more effortlessly and seamlessly. This would save valuable time and keep the entire process free from any kind of errors. It would also bring down the overall cost of logistics management for the Indian army.
2- Arms, artillery, and ammunition
No war on the battlefield can be won without the use of weapons. With the advancement in technology, weapons have undergone a drastic change. For example, AI-powered advanced missiles and guns have the potential to target only a specific area or individual without causing any civilian casualties or consequential damage.
3- Cyber-security operations
The use of AI-powered systems can help the Indian army protect all confidential information and military assets. Apart from air, water, and land, countries are at a threat from cyber attackers too. The use of artificial intelligence in Indian army enables the authorities to know about any possible intrusions by cybercriminals. In this way, confidential data can be prevented from falling into the hands of the enemy.
The use of AI in defence is the future and is going to be an integral part of various aspects of a battlefield. It is time that the Indian military adopts AI technology completely at the earliest.
