Women in AI – How has Dr. Sriparna Saha Made a Difference to the AI World?

Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science are the latest technologies that have created a tremendous impact in everyday life. Be it any industry, education, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, gaming, finance, and many others, technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the world. Technology is shaped by the people who create it, and when we talk about Artificial Intelligence, the contribution of women in AI comes to the forefront.

There are many top women in AI around the world who have developed their unique careers in Artificial Intelligence and reduced the tech gender gap that existed in the industry.

Search for women in AI, and the name Dr.Sriparna Saha will always be up there with women leading in AI across the globe.

Dr. Sriparna Saha is one of the top women in AI in India. Contributions made by Dr. Sriparna Saha in the field of AI

Development of the Multi-objective Optimization Framework to separate Tweets

Twitter has become a powerful social media platform and an effective means of communication, especially during the time of disasters for Government agencies and NGOs to provide information to the common public for immediate relief. However, the situational tweets get intermixed with the other tweets. Examining each and every Tweet is quite tedious and time-consuming as well.

In order to separate the tweets that contain disaster related information from the ones that do not, Dr. Sriparna Saha along with others from the Indian Institute of Technology Patna, designed a novel multi-objective framework. This framework made use of a deep learning-based classification model to separate the situations tweets from the others and summarize them in real-time.

Multi-modal gender identification system for users of social media

Different social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many others are being used on a regular basis for sharing information about their daily activities. The rise of social media has also led to many malicious and fraudulent activities. Anonymous writing has become quite common in the world of social media. It is extremely difficult to find the suspect involved in anonymous writing.

Dr. Sriparna Saha along with other researchers proposed a neural architecture for author profiling based on gender. This architecture could perform the gender prediction task on multi-modal Twitter data, thus enabling the social media users to know about male and female writing patterns.

Multi-modal summarization (MMS)

In today’s tech savvy world, people use various platforms to communicate and express their thoughts in the form of text, images, videos, animations, and audio. The use of multiple forms makes it difficult to obtain all the information about a particular topic. For this purpose, the automated multi-modal summarization (MMS) is crucial and this is exactly what Dr. Sriparna Saha worked on and published in the research paper ‘A Survey on Multi Modal Summarization’.

The real fact is that the field of AI is male-dominated. As per a study conducted by Wired and Element AI, there are only 12% women in AI researchers worldwide. According to a World Economic Forum Report 2020, women represent only 26 percent of the workforce for AI and data positions in various industries. In today’s world, there are many brilliant women in AI. Top women in AI are academic researchers, entrepreneurs, industry executives, and more. Women in tech are shaping the future of the industry. Also, the top women in AI are role models for the next generation of women in AI leaders.

Considering the rising demand for AI, gender diversity in AI matters. Women and technology go hand in hand. There are so many successful women in AI who have made it big in the tech field. It is time that women who are actually interested in making a career in AI come forward and accomplish their dreams.

Just like Dr. Sriparna Saha has shown to the world that getting a graduate certificate, master’s degree, or a doctoral degree is just the beginning. ‘Tech for women’ can be proved by more women in AI taking up leadership positions in organizations to increase the productivity and market value of organizations. Women and technology both have great powers of contributing something to society and transforming it big time.
